The first draft of what will hopefully become a pamphlet by August 2006: Early Period Music Theory.

It's an intro-level class handout, so by necessity there is a lot left uncovered. This draft's main goal is to take music back to its first physical and mathematical principles and then build it up from there. I took this approach for two reasons:

1) For people with zero music theory background, I hope it helps answer the question, "Why is it like this and not some other way?"

2) Some people with a very broad and deep musical background seem to have trouble thinking in terms other than the major and minor scales. For these folks, I hope the oblique approach will help avoid the major/minor/model questions entirely.
