Three reasons:

I'm much better at drinking. Time was when the fizzy nature of a bottle of cider meant it took me an hour to consume it.

My physical ability to process the booze I'm better at drinking has, however, declined with age.

There is a nasty positive feedback loop with me and tasty tasty drinks; the more I've had, the more another one seems like a fine idea.

These three things, in combination, are not so good.

Also, I have a sneaking suspicion I'm not nearly as amusing as I think I am when I'm half-put. And I endeavor to be pleasant company.
