"Highway congestion has grown so severe that virtually all of the Washington region's main commuter routes are chronically clogged and unable to move motorists efficiently, according to a regional study released yesterday."

Now, were they surprised at the congestion, or were they surprised that people were able to drive on the roads at all, since I-495 and the BW Parkway were rezoned as parking lots years ago?

You're out of touch with the news. They've rezoned them again as residential areas.

Telecommuting would greatly reduce traffic

When are companies and the government going to take Telecommuting seriously. With most work being done online now, when are we going to wake up as a society and leverage our technology for what it can provide, that is the ability to work anywhere. If companies let their employees work from home at least two days a week, I think we would see dramatic improvements.

Ha, I took that to mean Washington state and it still made sense to me.

(Including the part where our local officials would be surprised--and would be the only ones surprised.)
