Resolutions, revisited
Jan. 25th, 2007 03:02 pmBaby Resolution: Well, car seat and stroller both got resolved pretty quickly, so it's more than time to move to the next item. Cribs, I think. Possibly including bassinets.
Bardic Resolution: Definitely on-target to have the riddle performable by the end of the month. Next... hm.
SCA "pop" music tends to be naughty, bloody, weepy, or funny. The riddle is way naughty. I live in a barony with a strong fighting tradition, so maybe something bloody? I'm not aware of too many surviving war songs.
There is always "Agincourt Carol," I suppose. Perhaps I'll learn the tune and write a... wotzit? Contrafacta? Period term for "filk." This page has some other songs I've never heard of under the theme of "war." I have one or two Crusader songs somewhere at home, which might be other resources. Have to do some research on poetics at the time "Agincourt Carol" was current to get the new words about right.

My friend Aynne says that properly done, this song has every female in the room picking up sharp pointy things & getting ready to storm castles while every MALE in the room runs & hides.
just a suggestion.

Date: 2007-01-26 12:37 pm (UTC)There's this lingering belief in the SCA that period music is good for you, but not really something "the populace" can enjoy. That, to really engage an audience, you need to delve into the vast reams of "Trad"'s work or else modern composers.
My goal (we'll see if I get there or not) is to develop some repertoire that is both engaging to a general audience *and* authentic. And I mean including the right themes, imagery, and so on in the lyrics, and matching the words and music. So, if I use the tune from "Agincourt Carol," I should be looking at 15th c. English poetry, not the wonderfully bloody Anglo-Saxon war poems. If I write an A-S piece, or memorize a fragment of "The Battle of Maldon" or something, I'm on musically shakier ground but can leverage some of what I know about early period music theory and Saxon lyres to come up with some chant-y sort of thing.
Maybe that's what I should do... I've been putting off figuring out how to set non-metrical alliterative verse to music without through-composing the whole damn thing. Maybe a good start would *be* through-composing the whole damn thing... Wonder if Benjamin Bagby will allow a Q&A when he's in DC next month. ("Beowulf" at the Library of Congress!! *So* going!!)
