I finally got around to starting my "Learn Italian" CDs. Lesson 5 included the seasons, the days of the week, the months, and numbers.
"Venti" means "twenty" in Italian.
And lo, the Starbucks "Venti" size is twenty ounces.* It actually means something! One of the small mysteries (of my life, anyway) is explained.
*At least, for hot drinks. The cold drinks are 24oz, and so should probably be called venti-quattro.**
**Except that if we were to take the Italian pretense to its logical conclusion, we should specify the drink size in liters, not ounces.
