[livejournal.com profile] moeticae and I were at a chili parlor a few weeks back. As we were getting ready to go, the original TV series "The Dukes of Hazzard" was coming on. We only saw the credits roll before we were out the door.

Even just watching the credits, I had to say: if the show was about eye candy and the car, they were at least pretty even-handed about it. Sure, Daisy Duke was in her eponymous shorts, but at least one (and I think both) male leads appeared shirtless - in the show's opening credits, mind you. And, given that this was the 80s, I thought they looked pretty good. Not absolute manifestations of the Platonic ideal of masculine beauty or anything, but they were cute guys. They looked kind of open and friendly, if perhaps not all that bright.

The two guys in the upcoming movie just look... skanky. Unwashed, unshaven, ungroomed and more inclined to snigger than chortle. I could believe that the guys in the TV show were "just some good old boys, never meanin' no harm." These two look like they go out looking for trouble and have a generally nasty sense of humor about it.

And I'm fairly certain that how they look is no accident. Someone in costume design and makeup planned this look on the orders of someone else. (Can I blame the director?)

Pander to my demographic, dammit!
