Like so many mass transit systems in modern urban areas, DC has a plastic farecard you can put money on and, using what I assume is RFID technology, take off again as you use the subway and buses. Ours is "the SmartCard." Ooooooo.

Boston has the CharlieCard. I'm jealous.
