The following contains "spoilers," if you somehow managed to evade
Beowulf in high school. Can you really have spoilers for a thousand-year old piece of poetry?
The last time I heard about the upcoming Beowulf movie, I think my LJ post was titled "Beowhat?" It was reported that Angelina Jolie was playing a sorceress who tempts Beowulf, or something.
Ze trailer. Jolie is clearly Grendel's mother. Now, I don't recall Grendel's momma offering to make Beowulf an immortal hero, but I can see where this works. In Act 1, Beowulf kicks Grendel's butt. In Act 2, in the poem, Beowulf... kicks Grendel's mother's butt. It's on her turf, as opposed to his, and it's a tougher fight, but it's still another fight. I can see the desire to add some variety into the monster butt-kicking lineup (because the dragon's butt - guess what? - gets kicked in Act 3), so a dimension past physical conflict was added to his battle with her.
Hopefully not speaking too hastily, but from the trailer it even sounds culturally appropriate; she's offering lasting battle-glory, power and fame, which would have been dear to his little Geatish heart.
After the
King Arthur debacle, I'm not sure if I should get my hopes up or not. (For the record: Its crime was being too boring. After twenty minutes, I lost the will to care and wandered away from it.) Neil Gaiman's involvement on
Beowulf does speak well for it...
