Apprentice
Jun. 16th, 2008 10:39 amFive or so years ago, I was interested in becoming a Laurel's apprentice. These days? Not so much.
It's not that I've decided that it's a Bad Thing; far from it. I think it's an excellent thing and a good way to learn one's Art. I think it's that I've already been an apprentice, thankyouverymuch, and once was enough.
All right, not an apprentice exactly. Not in the SCA. But I was a grad student from 1999 to 2006, and a PhD student for most of that. I privately call my degree my "mundane Laurel," and... yeah. I've been there, done that, and have the T-shirt.
I can set and attain my own goals. I can chart my own course of research. If I don't know something, I know how I can go about finding it and learning it. I don't really want a mentor at this stage of the game. I know where my interests are, and where and how I want to grow and develop them.
I mean, you'd hope that would be the case, right? I'm theoretically fully qualified to be hired as a university professor, help grad students along their academic and career paths, teach Control Theory and propose a course of original research to add to the university's collection of knowledge. I would hope I can manage independent study in historically informed performance.
