While I admire the outside-the-box thinking, the speaker of that poem is unquestionably a woman. Old English adjectives can conjugate (or is it decline?) to denote sex, apparently, and when the speaker says that she sat "reotugu," wailing, she identifies herself as female.
At least, that's what one of my sources for the translation I did said.
