Fear the Turtle!
Aug. 10th, 2005 01:15 pmThe terrapin, the mascot of the University of Maryland, doesn't seem very scary. UMD tries hard, with that tough-guy looking cartoon turtle and the slogan "Fear the Turtle!" but really. When I think of athletic animals, the terrapin does not spring to mind.
But the terrapin is apparently one of the 100 most invasive animals in the world. A terp invasion in Britian is being forcibly removed and relocated to Italy - the turtles were bought as pets during the height of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle popularity. The water's too cold for them to reproduce in England, but the fear is that a warm summer could lead to a population explosion of the non-native specie.
