We went to Kingdom Crusades on Saturday. It was the first daylong event for the Spud (actually, we packed for an overnight but ended up coming home when we left the bardic early).

For such a busy day, I didn't do much. Visited with my sister, mostly. Played the lyre a bit, sang to the baby - had a little boy tell me that "The Hunt Is Up" was his favorite song. Realized, again, that all babies are instant celebrities wherever they go. Didn't get too much unsolicited advice.

There was apparently an instrument merchant, but I only ever got to one row of the merchants' area. Probably for the best - I just bought a thumb piano at Takoma Park.

Friends with cabins + hot running water in the cabins = pumping wasn't too much of a pain.

Spud was way overstimulated and only had two short naps. That and the heat meant he was cranky for a few of the midafternoon hours, but his usual pleasant demeanor returned as the weather cooled.

The bardic circle at Kingdom Crusades has been epic the past 2-3 years. We had even reserved a hotel room (it was freezing cold last year so we didn't want to camp with the baby in that) in case we wanted to stay til midnight or later at the bardic. But this year, the bardic had eight people show up in the first two hours. Now, the caliber of the performers present was in the Desert Eagle range, so no complaints there, but it was really really small. Spud finally fell asleep around 9:45, so we packed it up and left.

I tried my improv'd chant + lyre for the first time in public; needs more practice, but reasonably well-received. Worth pursuing. I couldn't start a song within my range for crap, and managed to flat out half the high notes in "The Parting Glass." I've been so focused on Music Ensemble and the newer, more period additions to my repertoire that I haven't sung any of the Oldies But Goodies in ages, and it's showing.

We started joking about the standard "Bardic Excuse" repertoire, and I'm trying to decide if it's more funny to not try and actually make a standardized list. Because I know how it would start:

1. I'm sorry but I'm not very good.
2. I haven't practiced as much as I should have.
3. I'm new at this so I hope this is okay.
4. I haven't done this one in a while so I might forget some of it.
5. My throat/nose is kind of messed up.
6. Well, I'm drunk, but we'll see how it goes. (Usually used more in the omission...)

And the pictures!

Now that I have my tickets... :)

The Washington Revels put on an fantastic Christmas/holiday show every year. Someone you know may be performing in them. If you're SCAdian, you may be interested to know that this year's theme is Elizabethan England. Even if none of those things are true for you, the show is still pure seasonal awesome.

The good seats go fast. Order soon!
