From late high school on, I have intermittently had short hair. Usually, this sort of mushroom-looking cut that always seems flattering in the mirror but looks awful in pictures.

I have always thought about going really short. Maybe even really short and a little spiky (although I have my doubts if hair gel would work on my notoriously unstylable hair).

Of course, my face looks nothing like Hepburn's or Ryder's. And my current stylist gasps in horror whenever I mention going super-short. Now, I overall trust her judgment, because the long, layered cuts she's given me have been fantastic. My hair has body and movement now. It looks good.

Short cuts are more expensive to keep up, but easier to care for. Money is snug, although I could probably pay for it out of my allowance.

I tend towards thinking, "Try it! It'll grow back if you hate it!" As they say, you'll regret what you didn't do. And if it's awful, the Spud is too young to be embarrassed by his mom's ugly hair.

Do I try to convince my current stylist to cut it or (gasp) go elsewhere?

It's hard ... gotta find a stylist that can handle short short hair. I'd love to look like those pics but I usually dont. It requires far more hairspray, the right gels and whatnot than I usually have patience for.

I've had mine short short over the summer, letting it grow a tad bit longer right now for winter. I sorta get away with it if I dont stare at mirrors too much.

I've also finally realized I like the way I look better in photos if I manage to show them my right side. So I actually do the entire cheesy "get my good side please" thing now. Except I don't say it out loud. Don't tell anyone! :-D Yes, I know, I'm posting this on LJ. D'oh.

I've had my hair really short- a long, long time ago (much shorter than the pic of Ryder, a tad shorter than Hepburn). I was not happy with it because I felt that it accentuated the roundness of my face. I suggest that you check out the hair styling page Redbook.com. You can choose a face from their files and try different hairstyles for free, or you can pay for the full deal, upload a pic of yourself and try the different hairstyles.

If you're thinking about it this much, I say go for it! Try to convince your current stylist; go so far as to outright tell her that you're dead set on a very short cut, and if she won't do it then you'll go someplace else.

I, too, have thought about a very short cut on and off for years. (My hair has been waist-length for 15 years, and before that it was never shorter than shoulder length.) I think that it'll probably look terrible on me, and all the growing-out stages will be completely unmanageable and full of cowlicks. But every summer, I think about it again ...

Do it! Do it! I applaud your determination! :-D
