Is it just me, or are these things really just very large, very casual purses which have been renamed so that men will consider buying them?

A quick Google shows me that once, these were bags used by actual bicycle couriers. But other sites are showing me pictures of, well, large purses.

Not that this is a bad thing, I hasten to add. A purse is useful, if your garment is lacking in pockets or you have something larger than a pack of cards to carry around. I don't begrudge men the opportunity to have their own satchels.

I think that might be the crux of it right there - because isn't a purse just a smallish, function-formalized satchel?

(On the other hand, I kind of want to know how well Mark Frauenfelder's bags are selling, because, frankly, "hey, I drew this thing and stuck it on a bag, buy it!" is kind of cynical even for Boing Boing.)

We have always envied the utility and awe-inspiring mystique of the purse. It's like hugs; we do them, and appreciate them, but they have to be clouded by manliness, characterized by a back-slap hard enough to crack at least two ribs.
