Head hurts
Nov. 6th, 2007 10:16 amI understand that they're taking liberties with the original poem in the upcoming Beowulf movie. Fine. While I don't fully understand the thinking behind dressing Beowulf in a sleeveless chainmail shirt1, I give them props for putting a wolf on his leather breastplate - nice touch. There are monsters and witches and dragons, as in the original (more or less), so we're clearly in a fantasy. Okay.
Why does Grendel's mother have feet shaped like stiletto heels?
1 - Actually, I assume it's the same thinking that gave us a bunch of CGI-enhanced Spartans in leather harnesses.

Date: 2007-11-06 03:34 pm (UTC)AGENT: Ms. Jolie's.
PRODUCER: Whatever. We want Ms. Jolie's legs to be extra sexy. Heels make women's legs sexy; have her wear heels while she's doing the motion capture.
PRODUCTION ASSISTANT: High heels for Ms. Jolie, right.
(PA scurries off to get high heels.)
ARTIST: Did they have high heels in the Middle Ages?
WRITER NEIL GAIMAN: This isn't the Middle Ages, it's first-millennium Scandinavia.
PRODUCER: Whatever. The CGI guys can just edit them out if Bob thinks they don't fit.
DIRECTOR ROBERT ZEMECKIS: What was that? I thought I heard my name, but I couldn't quite hear you through this giant pile of money.
PRODUCER: Nothing, Bob.
Later:
ZEMECKIS: Who the hell put Jolie in stilettos? They didn't have stilettos in the Middle Ages.
GAIMAN: First-millennium Scandinavia.
ZEMECKIS: Whatever.
GAIMAN: No, not "whatever"-
ZEMECKIS: Look, Neil, tea!
(GAIMAN scurries off to get tea.)
ARTIST: Well, her legs are going to look totally wrong if we just get rid of the shoes, unless you want her tiptoeing around all the time.
ZEMECKIS: ... would it look cool?
ARTIST: No, it would look like she's a ballerina. A naked ballerina.
ZEMECKIS: ... did they have ballerinas in the Middle Ages?
GAIMAN (in the distance): SCANDINAVIA!
ZEMECKIS AND ARTIST: Whatever.
ARTIST: We could just make her feet shaped like stilettos.
ZEMECKIS: If it means we don't have to re-shoot, go for it.
